Self-driven nonlinear dynamics in magneto-optical traps

چکیده
We present a theoretical model describing recently observed collective effects in large magnetooptically trapped atomic ensembles. Based on a kinetic description we develop an efficient test particle method, which in addition to the single atom light pressure accounts for other relevant effects such as laser attenuation and forces due to multiply scattered light with position dependent absorption cross sections. Our calculations confirm the existence of a dynamical instability and provide deeper insights into the observed system dynamics.

Loading dynamics of CO2 laser traps
We present a simple Fokker-Planck model for the evolution of the number of atoms and the spatial distribution in a CO2 laser trap which is loaded from a magneto-optical trap ~MOT!. Deep CO2 laser traps can achieve very high densities, but reach equilibrium slowly compared to shallow traps. Equilibrium times range from milliseconds for shallow traps to seconds in traps which are deep compared to...
متن کاملCreating long-lived neutral-atom traps in a cryogenic environment.
We describe techniques for creating long-lived magneto-optical and magnetostatic traps for neutral atoms. These traps exist in a sealed cryogenic environment with a temperature near 4 K, where the background gas pressure can be extremely low. To date we have observed cesium magneto-optical traps with background-limited lifetimes in excess of 1 h, and magnetostatic traps with lifetimes of nearly...
متن کاملPhase-space properties of magneto-optical traps utilising micro-fabricated gratings.
We have used diffraction gratings to simplify the fabrication, and dramatically increase the atomic collection efficiency, of magneto-optical traps using micro-fabricated optics. The atom number enhancement was mainly due to the increased beam capture volume, afforded by the large area (4cm(2)) shallow etch (~ 200nm) binary grating chips. Here we provide a detailed theoretical and experimental ...
متن کاملMeasuring the reabsorption cross section of a magneto-optical trap
Magneto-optical traps have been used for several decades. Among fundamental mechanisms occurring in such traps, the magnitude of the multiple scattering is still unclear. Indeed, many experimental situations cannot be modeled easily, different models predict different values of the reabsorption cross section, and no simple experimental measurements of this cross section are available. We propos...
متن کاملApproximated center-of-mass motion for systems of interacting particles with space- and velocity-dependent friction and anharmonic potential.
We study the center-of-mass motion in systems of trapped interacting particles with space- and velocity-dependent friction and anharmonic traps. Our approach, based on a dynamical ansatz assuming a fixed density profile, allows us to obtain information at once for a wide range of binary interactions and interaction strengths, at linear and nonlinear levels. Our findings are first tested on diff...
